Shin Ultraman
With the success of Shin Godzilla, Hideaki Anno returns with another installment in the same series(?) with Shin Ultraman. Like Godzilla it is big dudes fighting destroying Japan. I trust Anno and knowing nothing of Ultraman except the bare minimum I went into this with open eyes. Truthfully the plot of the movie was just utter nonsense to me. It feels like this was made with hardcore fans in mind, leaving newcomers to play catch up. Felt like it was three seasons crammed into one with a lot of moving parts. Even with me being on the back foot constantly I legitimately had a good time watching it. What I did understand was goofy nonsense, and that’s fine by me.
Where this movie shines is the camera angles. They are utterly insane and bizarre. I laughed at almost every single cut because the new angle left me with so many questions. These angles are only present when they have the dialogue heavy scenes. They are so funny it’s great. The action sequences were short but still a treat to the eye. Though with trying to pay respects to the source material the model for Ultraman moves around the space as if he were just T-posing and the camera moves around him. I think this movie is a watch for anyone regardless of knowledge of the source material. It’s a great time regardless.
In essence: I think I had a fever dream like this once.
